What Changed in June 2026
What Changed in June 2026
Rankings updated June 1, 2026. The biggest methodology shift since launch: Critic Awards now scored from documented evidence instead of manual estimates. 14 categorization errors corrected. Read on for the details.
Methodology Upgrade
Evidence-based Critic scoring
Critic scores now computed from documented mentions in JBF, Michelin, NYT, Eater, Charleston Magazine, P&C, Garden & Gun, and more, with diminishing returns to prevent any single award type from dominating.
New This Month
Convergence Multiplier
Restaurants covered across multiple distinct credible sources earn increased value. Coverage from 4 or more sources gets a meaningful boost, while a single source gets discounted. Rewards consensus over single-critic enthusiasm.
Category Discipline
14 categorization corrections
Restaurants are now only tagged in a category if they're primarily known for that food. Husk and Coda del Pesce out of Seafood. 167 Raw out of Sushi. Fine-dining spots out of Burgers and Pizza.
Closure Watch
Rodney Scott's BBQ paused
Excluded from active rankings due to temporary closure (ownership group financial-legal issues, May 2026). Lewis Barbecue holds #1 BBQ. We'll restore Rodney Scott's once they reopen.
Continuous Improvement
Always evaluating the model
We constantly review how we categorize and rank restaurants against the data available in the marketplace. June's changes are tweaks we believe better reflect a true aggregated approach. Some rankings shifted as a result, not because restaurants changed, but because our math now reads the signals more honestly.
What's Next

Why #2 James Beard Award + Netflix Chef's Table — the whole-hog tradition keeper
James Beard Award-winning pitmaster Rodney Scott cooks whole hogs over oak and pecan coals the way his family has for generations in Hemingway, SC — now anchoring King Street with a full-service restaurant. The whole-hog tradition is Eastern Carolina at its source: 12-hour overnight cooks, vinegar-pepper sauce, and pulled pork sandwiches that travel cross-country to win national press. Ownership group is facing financial-legal issues; all locations are temporarily closed as of May 2026 — check the website for reopening.
