About TasteSignal.ai

The 3 restaurants that matter right now, ranked by data.

TasteSignal.ai is a data-driven restaurant ranking platform for Charleston, SC. It combines critic awards, crowd ratings, momentum data, consistency metrics, and local sentiment from 12+ sources to surface the top three picks in each of 16 dining categories, plus a deeper ranked list. Every ranking cites its sources, and every score reflects evidence, not opinion.

The project launched on March 17, 2026 and is updated monthly.

Why this exists

Charleston is a great food town with thousands of opinions and not enough signal. Tourist guides recycle the same five names. Aggregators reward 4.2-star averages that flatten everything. Local food media is excellent but limited in scope. None of it answers the simple question: where should I eat tonight?

TasteSignal solves that by reading what the experts, the locals, and the data already say — then surfacing the clearest signal across all of it.

The Founder

Aaron Pennell

Founder · Adjunct Professor, College of Charleston School of Business

Aaron Pennell is the founder of TasteSignal.ai and an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston School of Business, where he teaches AI and analytics. He built TasteSignal as a live case study for his 40-student business and management class, turning a personal habit of curating restaurant recommendations for visiting friends into a public data product. The platform is operated as a course project, with students learning AI, data pipelines, and product analytics by working on a real audience.

How the Rankings Work

TasteSignal uses a proprietary ranking system built on five signals: Critic, Crowd, Momentum, Consistency, and Local Relevance. Each signal aggregates evidence from a defined set of sources, and every ranking lists the evidence behind it.

What's Next

Charleston is where TasteSignal is learning. The plan is to expand into five other food cities and add partnerships with local food experts, with a phone app in the longer-term roadmap. Rankings refresh monthly. The signal evolves as the data does.
