Why Charleston's Rankings Shifted in October 2026
A rebuilt ranking engine, a verified roster, and why we think it makes TasteSignal more trustworthy
If you checked TasteSignal this month, you noticed the movement. Fourteen of our 17 categories have a new #1, and several restaurants that sat on the podium all summer have moved down. That's not a sudden change in Charleston's dining scene. It's a change in how carefully we read it.
What changed
TasteSignal has always ranked restaurants on evidence rather than opinion: what critics say, what diners say, what's happening right now, and who has stayed great year after year. We are constantly evaluating how we gather and weigh those signals. In October we did a full overhaul.
Every piece of evidence is now logged, dated and sourced. We went back through more than five years of critic lists, guides, awards, reviews and reader polls, and recorded each mention with its date, its source and the restaurant it names. Recent recognition counts more than old recognition, and the same rules apply to every restaurant in every category.
The roster got a cleanup. We removed listings we couldn't confirm as open restaurants, merged duplicate locations, and drew a clear coverage area: Charleston and its neighbors, from West Ashley and James Island to Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms. For chains, we rank the location diners know best. We also added 17 restaurants that kept showing up on critic lists but weren't on our roster.
Category spots are earned. Burgers, Pizza, Brunch, Outdoor Dining, Date Night and our other dish and occasion categories now rank on coverage of that specific dish or occasion. A great restaurant that happens to serve a burger no longer tops the burger list by reputation alone. That's why Heavy's Barburger, a two-time winner of City Paper's Best Burger readers' poll, now leads Burgers.
Some of the biggest moves
- Best Overall: Lewis Barbecue takes #1, with FIG and Chubby Fish climbing to #2 and #3.
- Date Night: Circa 1886 rises to #1.
- Steakhouse: Marbled & Fin moves to #1, with Halls Chophouse at #2.
- Seafood: Chubby Fish moves to #1.
- Pizza: D'Allesandro's Pizza jumps to #1.
Every restaurant card now shows why it ranks where it does, with links to the sources behind it and an arrow comparing it with last month. Each category also carries a confidence score, our measure of how solid the underlying data is. Where the data is still filling in, we say so rather than paper over it.
Why we did it
TasteSignal exists to answer one question every month: where should you eat in Charleston right now? The answer is only as good as the data behind it, and the data decides, not our taste or anyone else's. This overhaul makes the rankings more consistent from month to month, easier to check, and harder to argue with. We'll keep refining how we read the signal, and we'll keep telling you when we do.
Think we're missing a restaurant? Suggest it, or nominate a great patio. Every suggestion goes into next month's research.
