What's New (November 2026)

What's New: November 2026

November adds the 2026 Michelin Guide, a new Rooftop & Waterfront Dining category, and fresh Google and Yelp ratings for nearly every restaurant. Business Dinner and Casual Local Favorite are now ranked entirely from the data, and restaurant pages now show month-by-month rank history.

New evidence
Michelin Guide American South 2026
The October 21 guide is now in the rankings: stars for Malagón, Vern's and Wild Common, Bib Gourmands for Leon's, Palmira and Rivayat, and new Recommended listings for Cane Pazzo and Merci.
New category
Rooftop & Waterfront Dining
A new ranking of restaurants with a full menu and a rooftop or waterside table, built from what critics and local guides say specifically about rooftop and waterfront dining. Bars and lounges without a full menu aren't included.
Categories
Business Dinner and Casual Local Favorite are fully data-ranked
Last month these two categories kept September's members while we added sources. From November they are ranked like every other occasion category: on coverage of that specific occasion first, then overall quality.
New pages
Restaurant pages and neighborhood guides
Every ranked restaurant with at least two independent sources now has a profile with the reasons behind their rank and their month-by-month rank history. New neighborhood pages list the best restaurants in Downtown, West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston and James Island.
Fresher data
Ratings and map pins refreshed
Google ratings now come straight from Google for almost every restaurant, alongside Tripadvisor and Yelp, and nearly every ranked restaurant now has a verified pin on the map.

Earlier updates

October 2026

What Changed in October 2026

October is our biggest update yet. We rebuilt how the rankings are produced: every critic list, award and rating behind a rank is now logged with its date and source, and every card explains why the restaurant ranks where it does.

New engine
Every rank now shows its reasons
Each restaurant card lists the critic coverage, diner ratings and recent news behind its position, with links to the sources. The same rules apply to every restaurant in every category.
Cleanup
A tighter, verified roster
We removed listings we could not confirm as open restaurants, merged duplicate locations, and narrowed coverage to Charleston and its neighbors: the peninsula, West Ashley, James Island, Johns Island, Daniel Island, North Charleston, Hanahan, Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms.
New roster
17 restaurants added from critic lists
Restaurants that kept appearing on critic lists but were missing from our roster, including Bowens Island, Estadio, Xiao Bao Biscuit, Maison and Pink Cactus, are now tracked and ranked.
Categories
Category membership is earned
Dish and occasion categories such as Burgers, Pizza, Brunch and Outdoor Dining now rank on coverage of that specific dish or occasion, not just overall reputation. Quick Lunch is now Best Lunch.

June 2026

What Changed in June 2026

Rankings updated June 1, 2026. The biggest methodology shift since launch: Critic Awards now scored from documented evidence instead of manual estimates. 14 categorization errors corrected. Read on for the details.

New This Month
Restaurants covered across multiple distinct credible sources earn increased value. Rewards consensus over single-critic enthusiasm.
Category Discipline
14 categorization corrections
Restaurants are now only tagged in a category if they're primarily known for that food. Husk and Coda del Pesce out of Seafood. 167 Raw out of Sushi. Fine-dining spots out of Burgers and Pizza.
Continuous Improvement
Always evaluating the model
We constantly review how we categorize and rank restaurants against the data available in the marketplace. June's changes are tweaks we believe better reflect a true aggregated approach. Some rankings shifted as a result, not because restaurants changed, but because our math now reads the signals more honestly.
What's Next
James Beard Awards June 16
Expect meaningful shifts in the July update once winners are announced. JBF wins compound across Critic, Momentum, and Consistency signals.
